Fund Raising Events
Events have been a significant component of the fund raising efforts for River Hospital.
From the time the hospital auxiliary began its annual fashion show in 1953, and now, 54
years later to this year’s Boldt Castle Gala, it is obvious that the community loves to come
together to celebrate and support the hospital in many ways.
Polar Bear Dip…Have you ever imagined jumping into the ice-cold waters of the St.
Lawrence River in mid February??? Well, thanks to the hard-working volunteers of
“Friends of River Hospital”, 46 people received pledges to “dip” this past winter and raised
almost $34,000, exceeding the goal of $30,000, which was designated for a new digital
EKG machine for the Cardio/Respiratory department.
* “A Day with a Fishing Guide” has become a favorite event for angling enthusiasts. At
the end of May, the Alexandria Bay Guides Association, along with the help of a few other
kind fishing guides, volunteer their time to take anglers to the fishing hot spots of the St.
Lawrence River. The afternoon is topped off with an authentic shore dinner of the “catch”
of the day, bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches, salad, salt potatoes, French toast with
maple syrup (and Bourbon, if you choose) prepared by the fishing guides and friends, at
the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority’s Rift Camp on Wellesley Island.
The Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon hosted by the River Hospital Auxiliary is held
in July each year and features “fashions of the islands”. For over half a decade, local
clothing and accessory retailers have had an opportunity to show off their products in
“runway style”. A large silent auction also showcases Thousand Islands region goods.
* Festive Evening is truly a river-lovers’ party. Held for the past four years in July, this
event has lured summer and year-round residents, boaters and river enthusiasts to the
Thousand Island Club on Wellesley Island for festive foods, drinks, music, a live and silent
auction filled with unique items, and, of course, a sensational social atmosphere. The fund
raising idea came about in the spring of 2003, when Mike and Julie Chavoustie, owners of
the TI Club, decided that they wanted to do something to help the hospital in its time of
need and the rest is history! Because of their unbelievable determination, generosity and
spirit for the community, the Chavoustie family and their dedicated friends have helped to
raise almost $400,000 from this event in four years!!!
* The “River Barby” is a quirky picnic-style island barbecue social event that was created
two summers ago with the energy and enthusiasm of board members, Elizabeth Price-
Kellogg and George Kittle. During the month of August, in the early evening, Patrick &
Christie Moynihan opened their lovely Grindstone Island home and prepared their property
for a kick-off-your-shoes, let-your-hair-down, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que feast!! Music by the Buo
y Rockers, a band of local talents, entertained the crowd into the evening before all
departed via the St. Lawrence River.
* Like a dream come true… reminiscent of days gone by…are the images created in the
minds of those attending the magnificent Boldt Castle Gala. This is truly a delightful
event that formally wraps up the summer, on the last Saturday in August, with grace and
style. Committee members, Jeanne Snow, Joe Russell, Brent Sweet, Diane Recupero, and
the late, Tony Malara, had a wonderful vision three years ago to create an event that
would match any that took place in the heyday of the 1000 Islands in the early 1900’s.
Mission accomplished! Thanks to the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority and staff at Boldt
Castle, Ron & Corinne Thomson of Uncle Sam Boat Tours as well as the numerous
volunteers this has become a momentous fund raising event for River Hospital.
* Signifies a River Hospital Foundation fund raising event.
